Haddeo Woodlands

Haddeo Woodlands: Largely oak, ancient semi-natural woodland in the Haddeo Valley Exmoor National Park

The most important privately owned Ancient Semi-Natural woodland on all of Exmoor.

Haddeo Woodland Both Bury Lodge and Haddeo Cottage are at the gateway to the outstandingly beautiful, largely deciduous, Haddeo woodlands which offer superb walks. There is the public right of way following the valley bottom and the River Haddeo via Lady Harriet’s Drive - a former carriageway which went from Pixton Park past Bury to Upton, reputedly described by Harold Pinter as the most beautiful walk in England. This dramatic landscape is characterised by steep valley sides cloaked in woodland and a relatively narrow but open valley floor. There are also permitted rights of way on tracks constructed by the present owner through the forest and the adjoining King’s Wood by Brompton Regis. There is an Ancient Woodland, and deciduous cover is largely oak, but includes beech. Although there is an impression of continuous tree cover, the wooded valley sides are interspersed with pockets of pasture. The river is fast flowing with, at times, large deposited boulders. The forest is overlooked by Haddon Hill which, with its moorland heather, forms a very typical Exmoor landscape, looking down into the wooded valley which is the natural habitat to numerous deer and other wildlife.

Fishing is available on the River Haddeo by private agreement with the owners of the estate.

Dogs are welcome but need to be kept under control.
